Candle Care

What are Balmy candles made with?

We use soy wax made from soy beans, responsibly sourced from farms in the United States and Europe.  Soy wax is vegan and biodegradable and because it has a lower melting point than paraffin waxes, our candles will burn more slowly and with an improved scent throw.  Our soy wax is paraffin free, palm oil free and free of toxic materials.  Our natural cotton wicks have been chosen to improve the candle performance and allow the candle to burn cleanly all the way to the bottom of the glass.

We primarily use essential oils in our fragrances.  All but one of our scents are made with 100% essential oils.  The only scent where we use synthetic fragrance (at the moment) is our new oud, spice & black spruce blend. This is made primarily with essential oils plus oud, a synthetic fragrance.  However we have chosen our supplier carefully to ensure the highest quality oud oil is used and avoid the artifical smell some synthetic fragrances have.  We continue to focus on creating fragrances which are designed to improve your wellbeing and smell 'natural'.

How do I avoid my candle 'tunnelling'?

This happens when a candle isn't lit for long enough to let the wax melt all the way to the sides of the candle jar.  Once this happens, the candle will tend to 'remember' this tunnel on subsequent burns.  To avoid this, allow the candle to burn all the way to the sides of the jar on each use - this may take 1-2 hours, so when lighting your candle try to do it when you can leave it for enough time (but remember never to leave a burning candle unattended!).

Why does my candle have moisture on the surface?

Soy wax candles need a higher essential oil content than paraffin wax candles.  When candles are exposed to temperature changes (such as from a cool delivery van to your warm home) this oil can temporarily separate from the wax.  However, as the candle adjusts to the temperature in your home this should rectify itself.  If some oil remains on the surface you can wipe it off gently with a tissue - but this is only necessary for aesthetic reasons, it will not affect the performance or scent throw of the candle.

Please note that our candles are hand poured, not mass produced, and whilst every effort is made to ensure consistency, every candle will be different.

Diffuser Care

What are your reed diffusers made with?

We use the new and high quality Augeo diffuser base made from soy based renewable sources.  Augeo has excellent solubility and low odour, ensuring the best possible fragrance.  Its low evaporation rate means your diffuser should last up to four months, or possibly even longer.

How do I get the best fragrance throw from my diffuser?

  • Firstly, make sure your diffuser is situated in the best position to maximise fragrance - we suggest that you avoid placing the diffuser near opened windows or sources of heat (as this can increase the evaporation rate and reduce the longevity of the diffuser).  Also be careful to keep the diffuser out of reach of small children or pets.
  • Secondly, turn the reeds over.  Do this at first to make sure both ends of the reeds are covered in the oils, helping to make sure that the fragrance starts to evaporate from the reeds straight away.  Then rotate the reeds periodically - we would suggest every fortnight to month.  Be careful when you do this - ideally rotate the reeds over your sink, or over a cloth/ tea towel as diffuser liquid can damage some household surfaces.

Face & Body care tips

My face mask is too runny, it's not forming a paste

You may have added too much water.  Use some more face mask powder to thicken to a paste.

For best results start with 1 tablespoon of face mask powder and then add 1 tablespoon of warm water.  If it is too thick, add more warm water, 1/2 tablespoon at a time until the mixture has formed a thick paste. Apply with your fingers, avoiding the sensitive eye area.  Remove after 15 minutes with a wet face cloth.
